Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the St Albans Chess Congress

Yes

Each player is required to record his/her own moves and those of his/her opponent in the correct manner, move after move, as clearly and legibly as possible.

No

The scoresheet is the property of the Congress organisers and must be used. You CAN copy your entire scoresheet into your own scorebook after your game has completed.

No

If a player has less than five minutes left on his/her clock during an allotted period of time, then for the remainder of the period he/she is not obliged to record moves. When the game is completed, both players shall update their scoresheets , using the arbiter’s or the opponent’s scoresheet.

No

The regulations about electronic devices are now very strict. If a mobile phone (even switched off) is found on a player, his/her game is immediately lost and the opponent shall win.

Devices may be switched off and placed face down on the table for the duration of the game, or be stored in a player’s bag, provided the device is completely switched off. It must not be on the player's person.

Depends

Only with the permission of the arbiter can:

  • a player leave the playing venue

  • the player having the move be allowed to leave the playing area

  • a person who is neither a player nor arbiter be allowed access to the playing area

Depends on how late

If a player turns up later the stated default time (30 mins) after the match start time, he/she loses the game.

The scoresheet needs to be returned

The players fill in and check the scoresheet - please include both names and the score. The winner, or both players in the case of a draw, hands in the fully completed score sheet to the control desk.
